“I trust that my work reflects my
love of wood and my respect
for its character.”
George Biersdorf
George Biersdorf has been a professional woodworker for nearly 30 years. Longevity counts. Skill counts. But neither account for the artistry that Biersdorf brings to the creation of wood lampshades that will grace any living or work space. Biersdorf uses only Native American hardwoods, most of which he harvests and dries by himself. He says this "cultivation of woods is the most rewarding and time consuming part" of his artistry. Every shade is a one-of-a-kind work of art. He runs a one-man-shop, managing without assistants or apprentices.
I first saw George Biersdorf’s work at a fine craft fair and was struck by the glow of warm light filtering through his wood lamps. His shades would enhance a room that is dimly lit or sunlit. I was next struck by his affection for his wood and his art. As we all strive to create a living space that is at once individual, lovely and warm, George Biersdorf enhances our opportunities.
