Aurica Pomponiu

We stumbled onto Aurica Pomponiu's artistry at a museum gallery gift shop in Bucharest, Romania.  The shop carried a few pieces of her handpainted boxes and trays.  As is often the case in searching for artists for Global Artisan Showcase, the museum graciously provided her phone number and she welcomed us into her home, which is also her gallery.
There we found a treasure of tapestries and handpainted art.

Pomponiu is an instructor at the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts.  But teaching is just one aspect of her extraordinary talent.  We discovered tapestries lining her walls that were stunningly beautiful, and most of them are now in the Global Artisan collection.  They are all wool, finely detailed, contemporary and traditional creations.  And unbelievably, she weaves only one of each pattern.  They are truly collector's items.  Several of them can be seen at The Textile Museum gift shop in Washington, DC.  She is no longer weaving. 

We also admired her entirely freehand painted dining table so much that we ordered four smaller 'sunroom' size tables just for Global Artisan's collection.  In fact, all of the handpainted wood pieces in the Global Artisan Showcase were created exclusively for us.  Many other styles are available for custom orders.  Her range is broad and her artistry is exquisite.  Ask us about your special design preferences.
