 Maurizio Romano |
Rooting around the narrow cobblestone alleys of central Caltagirone, Sicily it is easy to miss the shop of Maurizio Romano, tucked away at the end of a little walkway. Once inside, you can't help but be taken by the beauty of his gallery space. Unlike the vast number of European tourist-oriented ceramics shops, Romano's is sparse by comparison. With plenty of space to walk and stand and admire his artistry, Romano is clearly about quality over quantity. A collector's treasure.
Maurizio Romano's father is the artist creator of one of the premiere outdoor frescoes in Caltagirone, occupying a huge wall in a former outdoor forum and transportation terminal in the city center. Romano has been practicing the ceramic artistry he learned from his father since 1964.
In 1990, Romano invented 'buccia d'arancia', applying paint in tiny drops rather than brush strokes, which you see in his ceramic art exhibited by Global Artisan Showcase. It is this technique which allows him to produce extraordinarily precise and detailed handpainting on ceramic plates and bowls. Romano's art is the polar opposite of the generic slap-dash paint strokes typical of ordinary Italian ceramics.
Don't miss his handpainted ceramic fish. Beauty and great fun in wall art.
